The ICAS-Math is developed by the Educational Assessment Australia (EAA), UNSW Global Pty Limited and is conducted annually in Australia and in 12 other countries including New Zealand, Brunei, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa, USA, Philippines and the Pacific region.

As usual, the ICAS Math assesses five strands: Number and Arithmetic, Algebra and Patterns, measures and Units, Space and Geometry, Chance and Data. Generally, the ICAS provides extensive independent evaluations of students’ skills, knowledge and understanding in the core learning areas. These skills and understanding are important indicators of success in school and beyond, said Dr. Sofia Kesidou, General Manager-Assessment and Research at EAA.

The ICAS-Math result this year is several times better than that of last year. This year, around 65% of the ICAS-Math participants from the Philippines received certificates for their impressive performance. As more Pinoy math wizards showed mathematical excellence this year, Dr. Simon Chua, MTG president has expressed his joy and delight at how our participants have fared in the competition. Thus, he leads the MTG family in giving his warm congratulations to the participants and to their parents and schools.

The ICAS – Science assesses skills in the areas of: interpreting data, applying data and higher order skills including investigating, reasoning and problem solving. These skills are embedded in the syllabus documents of all the key learning areas and are meant to be taught in context. The skills are tested in contexts drawn from four Science knowledge areas: Earth and Beyond (incorporating the Earth Sciences and Astronomy), Natural and Processed Materials (incorporating Chemistry), Life and Living (incorporating Biology and Ecology) and Energy and Change (Incorporating Physics).

This year, the Philippine participants achieved outstanding results for getting more awards compared with the performance last year. Which is why, no less than Penny Hutton, Senior Manager- Assessment at EAA said, “All students from the Philippines are to be congratulated on their significant achievements.” He further stressed that the ICAS provides extensive independent evaluations of students’ skills, knowledge and understanding in the core learning areas.

Furthermore, participants are advised to be at the contest venue before the competition starts at 8:30 in the morning. They are requested to remember of the following reminders:

1. Be in complete school uniform and ID;
2. Bring pencils preferably 2B or B (NOT pen)
3. Mobile phones, pagers, and other personal electronic devices are not permitted; and
4. Dictionaries are NOT permitted.

Participants are advised to be at the contest venue before the competition starts at 2 o’clock in the afternoon. They are requested to remember of the following reminders:

1. Be in complete school uniform and ID;

2. Bring pencils preferably 2B or B (NOT pen)

3. Mobile phones, pagers, and other personal electronic devices are not permitted; and

4. Dictionaries are NOT permitted.

Furthermore, the participants of the Colegio San Agustin-Makati have been assigned in Grace Christian College for the 2010 ICAS-English and NOT in Colegio San Agustin-Biñan as previously announced.
