47 RP kids get high distinction in 2010 ICAS-Science

The Educational Assessment Australia (EAA) of the University of New South Wales headed by its Group Executive, Mr. Jeff Laurie disclosed that a total of 363 Filipino kids from the 610 Philippine participants who joined in the 2010 International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) Science garnered 47 High Distinction, 136 Distinction and 180 Credit Awards. Participated in by more than 1 million elementary grades 3, 4, 5 and 6 pupils and 1st to 4th year high school students from ten countries including Indonesia, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei and some territories in the pacific, the Philippines showed an improved results in 2010 ICAS-Science administered simultaneously worldwide on June 8, 2010.

The ICAS – Science assesses skills in the areas of: interpreting data, applying data and higher order skills including investigating, reasoning and problem solving. These skills are embedded in the syllabus documents of all the key learning areas and are meant to be taught in context. The skills are tested in contexts drawn from four Science knowledge areas: Earth and Beyond (incorporating the Earth Sciences and Astronomy), Natural and Processed Materials (incorporating Chemistry), Life and Living (incorporating Biology and Ecology) and Energy and Change (Incorporating Physics).

This year, the Philippine participants achieved outstanding results for getting more awards compared with the performance last year. Which is why, no less than Penny Hutton, Senior Manager- Assessment at EAA said, “All students from the Philippines are to be congratulated on their significant achievements.” He further stressed that the ICAS provides extensive independent evaluations of students’ skills, knowledge and understanding in the core learning areas.
